We are partnering with Iron Energy utilising their new Hydrogen Storage System to harvest and store surplus green hydrogen from intermittent power supply of solar & wind. This innovative technology harnesses the power of the Steam Iron Process and enables scalable solutions for the chemical storage of hydrogen in a efficient and safe way.

How it Works
Hydrogen is stored chemically using the steam-iron process. Excess energy from renewable sources is used to produce hydrogen. This hydrogen is pre-heated before entering the storage tank where it reacts with iron oxide, forming elemental iron and water. When discharging, the process is reversed so that the hydrogen can be recovered when hydrogen is required. This technology allows to store hydrogen in vast amounts cost-effectively for many cycles.

Hydrogen Production: Oversupply from renewable energy sources is used to produce surplus hydrogen

Charging:
The generated hydrogen is pre-heated and fed into the storage tank and reacts with iron oxide to produce elemental iron and water

Storage:
Oversupply from renewable energy sources is used to produce surplus hydrogen

Discharging:
When hydrogen is required, water vapor is fed into the system which reacts with the iron to form hydrogen and iron oxide

Further Use:
The hydrogen obtained through discharging is then available for your chemical application, as reduction agent or for energy purposes

CENEC is combining the innovative technologies from Iron Energy for hydrogen storage and AED energy for heat supply to deliver a complete storage solution, modular and scalable. This comes at a much lower cost per kg hydrogen than any other storage technology. Additional advantage is safety: free hydrogen in the system is only present during charging/discharging, when fully charged there is no hydrogen in the system.
